Senat und Konzil

The Senate and the Council are central bodies of the university in which members of all status groups are represented.

Senate

What is the Senate doing?

The Academic Senate consists of 12 professors, 4 students and 6 employees of the university. It meets monthly and deals, for example, with appointments and the modification and establishment of degree programs. The Senate also proposes candidates for the office of Rector and the offices of Vice Rector to the Council.

In the Senate, the four students have a special option in the form of the “student veto”: in the case of decisions concerning questions of study organization, student self-administration or the social concerns of students, a veto by the majority of the student senators present leads to a postponement and the Senate must discuss the matter again at a subsequent meeting with the prior involvement of other students.

senate commissions

In addition to the monthly meetings, the Senate works in four Senate committees that prepare content for the Senate. These Senate committees exist for the following areas:

  • Studies, teaching, evaluation
  • Budget, staff, construction
  • Structural issues
  • Research, science transfer and young academics

In the Senate Commission for Studies, Teaching and Evaluation in particular, we as students can have a lot of influence that affects us directly and strongly.

Current student members

The student senators are elected annually and represent the interests of the student body. The current student senators until September 2024 are (from left to right)

  • Paul Peter Winkel, UMR
  • Charlotte Beermann, JUF
  • Alina Marie Sulfrian, PHF
  • Lara Tauch, MNF

Council

What is the Council doing?

The Council consists of a total of 66 members – 22 professors, 22 employees and 22 students. It usually meets twice a semester and deals with fundamental matters of the university. These include, above all, changes to the university’s basic and electoral regulations and the election of the Rector and Vice Rectors. Currently, the Council regularly deals with sustainability at our university.

As the Council only meets infrequently and therefore has little routine, the work is not always easy. However, the big advantage for us is the one-third parity (students have one-third of the seats), which gives us much more voting power in the Council than in the Senate. In addition, a student should always be represented on the Presidium of the Council, which consists of four people.

Current student members

The student council members are elected annually and represent the interests of the students. Alina is currently a member of the Presidium of the Council.

How can I participate in the committees?

The elections take place every year in early summer and usually parallel to the StuRa elections. These are list elections, so you usually don’t run alone, but together with other students on a list. Political university groups or departments often run against each other. The student term of office on the committees always runs from October to September.
